Temporary Works Showcase

Client: Rubix Consulting

Rubix Consulting are a specialist engineering consultancy, set-up exclusively to deliver Temporary Works solutions to the UK construction industry. Based in the West Midlands, but operating nationally, Rubix’s work is instrumental to the safety of temporary works, and the construction industry as a whole.

Rubix approached GMG Video Production with the aim of producing a promotional video for use on their website, while also gathering additional visual assets in the process (this includes: high quality imagery, timelapses and video banners for their website).

The Brief

The brief was to capture two live construction sites in Birmingham, for which Rubix Consulting had carried out the temporary works designs. On one of these sites, we were tasked with filming the live erection of a large tower crane – a temporary structure used to assemble the large apartment complex ultimately intended for the site.

This footage was then to be combined with on site interviews, as well as interview footage recorded seperately at Rubix’s offie premises.

Our Approach

We worked with Rubix to first understand what they were hoping to achieve from their video content, sharing our thoughts and feedback on their initial ideas. This entailed looking at the two sites Rubix were hoping to film, and exploring the constraints of those sites prior to our planned filming days.

We worked closely with Rubix to understand how we could film safely during the ongoing construction works, and how we could do so without impeding on the primary functions of the sites we were tasked with filming at.

One challenge with capturing this project is that the erection of the tower crane was a live process, and one where getting the shot first time was of paramount importance. We were also operating in a loud environment, with arterial main roads and heavy traffic around the site. To combat both of these challenges we set up additional camera angles, had one of the videography team head out to site in the early morning, in case the process ran ahead of schedule, and used specialist microphones to isolate and remove background noise.
